Background

I started Wings Like a Dove LLC in 2021 at a major and difficult turning point in my life and with the genuine encouragement of my young adult daughter. I am deeply grateful for the experiences that brought me to that turning point – for the opportunity they gave me to look openly and compassionately at myself, to learn life lessons, and to grow in my soul.

The unquestioning and whole-hearted support that my daughter expressed when I shared my ideas immediately removed doubt, buoyed my confidence, and surrounded me with the kindness of, “It’s okay if it works or if it doesn’t work. It’s good to try.” I’ve always appreciated the adventure and optimism of the young adult.

My formal education includes a Ph.D. in Curriculum & Instruction, an M.A. in International Affairs, and a B.S. in Education. All were free* by the lucky happenstance of growing up very low income with a sharp mind, and with work experiences that awarded me scholarships and GA-ships. For this, I am truly grateful to the system.

My work experience primarily centers around education-oriented endeavors, including camp counselor for children and adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities, Peace Corps Volunteer (K-2 intervention specialist), junior high intervention specialist, early intervention coordinator (supporting parents of children with disabilities, birth through two), nonprofit program director, education professor, and academic services director.

I have also enjoyed employment in family business management, retail, grocery, delivery driving, pet sitting, dishwashing, and as a tea barista.

*Technically, I did take out a $2,000 loan for my bachelor’s degree (yes, that’s it) because I simply assumed I would need the money for college. Instead, I used it to travel to the Bahamas once and Jamaica twice. It turns out that my early life prepared me to live quite frugally, so I did not need the loan to pay tuition, though it certainly provided for life education. Also, I was able to live on graduate associateship money for my two advanced degrees ($5,400/year for one year and $10,000/year for three years respectively).

When my house burned down I gained an unobstructed view of the moonlight sky.

Zen

In the pursuit of knowledge, every day something is gained. In the pursuit of freedom, every day something is let go.

It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.
